Oldest Syrah Vines Stonecroft is a genuine boutique winery, New Zealand family owned and operated. The wines are released in February of every year, and are available nationally through our mail order system, distributed exclusively by Eurowine to restaurants and selected retailers nationally, and available from the cellar door. For international availability, please enquire at the winery, or via e-mail. Our first vineyard site was purchased in 1982, with the intention of producing fruit to provide the foundation for high quality wines. Grapes are from our Mere Road Vineyard and Tokarahi Vineyard, at Roy's
Hill. Maximum effort has gone into selecting the sites and developing
the vineyards to produce high quality fruit. Both vineyards are planted
in very stony, free draining soil in two of Hawke's Bay's best viticultural
sites. (This area is now known as Gimblett Gravels.) Consequently, the
wine styles in general are full bodied, soft, intensely fruity wines. |

A landmark for Stonecroft was the first release of Syrah in 1989 - New Zealand's first commercial release of this variety in recent times. These early endeavors have created widespread interest in this variety for New Zealand. This has now been followed by New Zealand's first Zinfandel.
All harvesting is by hand and the wine making is traditional. The whole philosophy is one of quality without compromise. Since our first vintage in 1987, the development of our style over this period has been significant, and we have progressed towards our original intention - "to produce full-bodied, elegant, fruit-driven wines" capable of significant bottle development. |
