Stonecroft Sauvignon Blanc 2009 Hawke's Bay 94 5 Stars As usual, Stonecroft Sauvignon Blanc is one of New Zealand's most distinctive, delectable and lovely wines. Not because it is a great alternative to the classic Marlborough model but this is a great wine which happens to be made from Sauvignon grape. The bouquet is ripe and subtly herbal displaying stonefruit, citrus and dried herb characters with a hint of chalky notes. The palate is concentrated and richly textured with excellent weight and well pitched acidity. A very stylish Sauvignon. Grapes were sourced from Te Mata's Woodthorpe Vineyard. At its best: now to 2014. $20.00 12.5% Diam cork. www.stonecroft.co.nz. Dec 2009.
Stonecroft Syrah 2008 Hawke's Bay 94-96 5 Stars A beautifully elegant and youthful nose displaying red plum, spice, game and a touch of pepper characters on the nose. Considering the wine's youth, the bouquet is remarkably complex. It's concentrated on the palate showing fine texture, bright acidity and gently drying chalky tannins. The wine is perfectly ripe, but not over-ripe, and beautifully weighted, yet not heavy. As the wine sat in the glass, it continued to evolve exhibiting extra flavours (dried herb, cedar) and a richer, smoother mouthfeel. A superbly structured wine destined to age magnificently. At its best: 2014 to 2022. $45.00 Diam cork.
Stonecroft Zinfandel 2007 Hawke's Bay 94 5 Stars Medium-deep red in colour. The nose is intensely aromatic displaying blackberry, mixed herb, floral and vanillin oak characters. It's explosive on the palate showing a flavour-packed mid palate, a richly textured mouthfeel and plenty of supple tannins. A real knockout showing awesome power and staggering intensity while beautifully framed by the balanced acidity and tannins. A wonderful Zin. At its best: now to 2016. Diam cork. $55.00 Dec 2009.
