Sauvignon Blanc 2009
Hand picked, tank fermented, aged on lees 2-3 months. Beautiful scented, almost floral nose of tropical fruits, mango and a touch of lychee with a dash of capsicum. Nicely weighted fresh clean palate, good balance with a nice fresh fine lingering acidity. As usual, this fruit is from the Te Mata Woodthorpe vineyard. Attracted a lot of interest at our distributors recent roadshow.

Gewurztraminer 2009 - SOLD OUT
Frost again largely decimated our 2009 crop. My good friend Kim Salonius (Eskdale Winegrowers) came to the rescue with some of his crop. Quite serendipitous since it was Kim who first introduced me to the early Matawhero Gewurztraminers. Hand picked, tank fermented and aged on lees 2-3 months. Lovely delicate floral nose- Jasmine and rose petal. The palate is medium weight, well balanced with a long well integrated finish of Lychee with hints of lime.

Old Vine Gewurztraminer 2009
I am glad we persevered and salvaged what Old Vine fruit we had from the frost ravaged Chardonnay and Gewurz. This wine was picked very ripe with a small amount of botrytis influence – but not really enough to appear amongst the opulent gewurz notes. This wine is opulent in every sense. Light-medium gold in colour, it has a powerful aromatic bouquet with a fat texture and looong grainy, spicey finish. It is off dry, ie medium residual sugar and very easy drinking now. A big wine.

Chardonnay 2009
Again, fruit hand harvested from Kim’s Esk Valley vineyard. Excellent condition, and the same Mendoza clone we use. The wine was treated the same as we usually do – barrel ferment in Fr oak, some MLF and lees ageing. The wine has terrific texture and balance and length. 2009 looks like a great Chardonnay year.

Old Vine Chardonnay 2007
This would be one of the finest Chardonnays I have made. Beautifully structured finely balanced wine with lovely weight and poise. A slight edge of acidity, which should serve it well in the future. A long lingering finish. The previous OV Chardonnays have received a number of 5 * reviews, and this one may beat them all. Twelve months in barrel on the lees, and 9 months in bottle, to date. Drinking beautifully now, and will cellar for ages (decade +).

Ruhanui 2008
Perfumed dense fruity aromas, finely poised dense fruit, fine grained long tannins. Very nicely balanced and restrained but with underlying power. Very ripe flavours. One of our best. Merlot 74% Cabernet Sauvignon 26%.

Crofters Syrah NV
We last did a Crofters Syrah in vintage 2000. This wine is a cross vintage blend comprising mainly 2007 fruit. The Young Vine Syrah label will not continue for the foreseeable, as our youngest Syrah vines are now about eight years old. All barrel aged for the full term, off our own vineyards etc. This wine is the material that has not found its way into the final blend for our Syrah or Serine Syrah, although portions of this fruit are almost invariably in these final blends, and vintage 2007 looks excellent for Syrah. Dense ruby/magenta colour. Lovely floral nose, nice medium weight palate showing wild fruits with spice and mineral notes. Good length, easy drinking, lingering finish.

Serine Syrah 2008
Lovely aromas of violets and blackberries. Great mouthfeel and density, rich ripe flavours of black cherries and spice. Long fine finish with fine grained spicy tannins. Well balanced.

Syrah 2008
Dark ruby red, lovely dense fragrant bouquet of violets and dark fruits. Lovely rounded textured palate, dense, balanced and fine grained spicy finish. I think this would be one of our best, from an otherwise slightly difficult year.

Zinfandel 2008
Ruby red colour. Beautiful floral lifted aromatics. Medium bodied sweet red cherry flavours with a lengthy finish of cinnamon and spice.
